Murata launches a pioneering commercial XBAR high frequency filter with high attenuation and low loss above 3 GHz

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
President and Representative Director: Norio Nakajima

Key features

  • A pioneering commercial high frequency filter using XBAR technology.
  • Low insertion loss, high attenuation and wide bandwidth at frequencies above 3 GHz.
  • Combines Murata's proprietary surface acoustic wave (SAW) filter technology with high quality and cost efficiency.

Murata Manufacturing announced today that it has begun mass production and shipment of a market-leading*1 high frequency filter using XBAR technology*2. The product combines the XBAR technology of Resonant, acquired by Murata in 2022, with Murata's proprietary filter technology. At frequencies above 3 GHz, it extracts desired signals with low loss while rejecting interfering signals from adjacent frequency bands*3.

The evolution of mobile communications systems such as 5G and 6G and wireless LAN standards such as Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 has rapidly increased demand for ultra-high-speed, high-capacity communications. These technologies use frequency bands above 3 GHz, where low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) and bulk acoustic wave (BAW) filters are commonly used to extract the desired signals. However, LTCC filters and conventional BAW filters face challenges at these frequencies, including insufficient attenuation that allows unwanted signals from adjacent bands to pass through and generate noise.

By combining Resonant's XBAR technology with Murata's proprietary technologies, the new filter achieves high attenuation even above 3 GHz, effectively suppressing noise. It also delivers the low loss and wide bandwidth required for high frequency communications, contributing to high speed, high capacity and high quality wireless connectivity.

XBAR technology can also achieve high attenuation, low loss and wide bandwidth at ultra-high frequencies above 10 GHz, which are among the target bands for 6G communications. Murata will continue developing high frequency filter components that meet market needs and advance high performance, multifunctional wireless communications.
