Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
President and Representative Director: Norio Nakajima
Murata Manufacturing has received an A rating*1 for Climate Change and inclusion in the highest-rated list, together with an A− rating for Water Security, through the environmental disclosure platform operated by international nonprofit organization CDP.
In 2025, more than 22,100 companies worldwide disclosed information through CDP, and 20,000 received scores. An A rating indicates comprehensive disclosure, highly mature environmental management and meaningful progress toward environmental resilience. Murata has achieved leadership-level ratings in Climate Change for five consecutive years and inclusion on the A List for three consecutive years. It has also received a leadership-level Water Security rating for the fourth time.
*1 Scores comprise eight grades, from highest to lowest: Leadership (A, A−), Management (B, B−), Awareness (C, C−) and Disclosure (D, D−).
Murata attributes these results to the initiatives below and to the support and trust of its stakeholders. Through unique products and technologies, it will continue creating a positive cycle between economic and social value, contributing to reduced overall environmental impact and solutions to social challenges.
Climate change targets and results
Murata continues to reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing and treats realization of a decarbonized society as a priority in its Medium-Term Direction 2027. In fiscal 2024, renewable energy accounted for 39.2% across the Murata Group, while Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG)*2 emissions fell 35% from fiscal 2019. Scope 3 initiatives also continued, with GHG emissions falling 24% compared with fiscal 2019.
RE100 represents the goal of using 100% renewable electricity in business operations. In September 2024, Murata brought forward its RE100 target from fiscal 2050 to fiscal 2035, an acceleration of 15 years. Alongside faster RE100 implementation, Murata aims for net-zero Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions, or carbon neutrality, in fiscal 2040, and carbon neutrality across the entire supply chain, including Scope 3, in fiscal 2050.
*2 GHG: greenhouse gas.
Progress on climate change initiatives
Murata is pursuing measures to increase renewable energy adoption and use, including control systems that enable efficient and effective use of solar generation and storage batteries, and corporate power purchase agreements (PPAs). In addition to conventional energy-saving capital investments, it uses internal carbon pricing (ICP) and sustainable investment promotion programs to advance new energy conservation measures. Systems that visualize the condition of factory equipment using Murata wireless sensors help optimize energy use in production.
To reduce Scope 3 emissions, Murata works with customers, suppliers and logistics providers on practical reduction approaches. To reduce GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, it maintains supplier relationships, accelerates collection of primary data and shares its expertise in energy conservation and renewable energy to build a sustainable supply chain. Changes in transportation methods and reductions in packaging materials also aim to lower emissions.
Murata conducts detailed analysis of opportunities and risks in transition scenarios based on TCFD*3 and discloses related information about governance and strategy.
*3 TCFD: Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures.
Water security initiatives
Murata views water as an essential natural resource for its operations. To reduce its impact on local communities and the environment, it continually reduces water consumption, manages wastewater appropriately and reuses water. Growing public attention to natural resource conservation has further emphasized the importance of water and responding to water risks. Murata considers manufacturing's dependence on water and its potential impacts a significant issue.
Murata uses water efficiently across its Japanese and overseas locations. Improvements include reusing 100% of process wastewater within the process, achieving a 50% water recycling rate by circulating industrial water and reducing water costs by approximately 80% from the previous year through wastewater recovery and reuse services.
Alongside company-wide management, Murata evaluates context-based water targets (CBWT)*4, considering both water supply-demand balance and impacts on biodiversity and local communities. It identifies facilities with relatively high water stress and manages them in line with risk reduction policies, targeting water reuse and zero wastewater discharge. Technology development, process improvements and proper chemical management support stable operations while reducing local environmental impact.
As a company-wide initiative, each business location establishes internal standards stricter than legal requirements and rigorously prevents contaminated water from leaving its premises, avoiding leakage of environmentally harmful substances. Murata is also strengthening the organization and disclosure of site improvements, water risk assessments and management information that includes biodiversity considerations.
*4 CBWT: Context-based Water Target, a water target reflecting local and catchment characteristics.
