Murata Manufacturing has become the first company in the world to develop an ultra-compact 006003-inch multilayer ceramic capacitor measuring 0.16 mm × 0.08 mm. Its volume is approximately 75% smaller than the existing ultra-compact 008004-inch product measuring 0.25 mm × 0.125 mm. Murata plans to exhibit the product at its CEATEC JAPAN 2024 booth. The event will take place at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, from October 15, 2024.
As electronic devices become more powerful and smaller, they incorporate more components while available mounting space shrinks. The number of multilayer ceramic capacitors in devices also increases with functionality, with new smartphones using up to approximately 1,000 capacitors. These trends drive demand for ultra-compact products that enable high density mounting in limited space.
Murata has researched and developed ceramic capacitors since its founding in 1944, creating proprietary core technologies in raw materials, manufacturing processes and production. In 2014 it pioneered commercialization of 0201M-size multilayer ceramic capacitors, which have since become increasingly common, especially in smartphone modules and wearables.
The successful development of the ultra-compact 006003-inch capacitor combines Murata's accumulated core technologies and will significantly contribute to further miniaturization and higher performance in electronic devices. Under its ‘Innovator in Electronics’ slogan, Murata will continue leading the industry through distinctive products and technologies.
